Italy Investor Visa for UK investors: residence, family and tax planning
MFG Consultants · Updated 4 November 2026
A British passport, UK tax residence and a home in Britain describe different parts of your position. They should be checked separately when planning Italian residence. An investor living in London, one based in Dubai and one preparing a permanent family move may need different application logistics and tax work, even if they select the same investment route.
Which Italian consulate should handle my application?
Start with your established place of residence and the relevant consular district. British nationality alone does not make London the correct office. London's investor-visa checklist includes an in-person appointment, the Nulla Osta and supporting documents; residence evidence must fit your circumstances. A non-British UK resident should check the current eVisa requirements where applicable. Confirm the checklist directly before booking travel or relying on an appointment date.

What investment decision is needed before applying?
MFG focuses on qualifying innovative-startup investment from €250,000 and qualifying Italian-company investment from €500,000. The application needs a defined recipient and commitment, so the investment review belongs before filing. Identify the legal entity, instrument and evidence of eligibility. Where a structure involves a fund or intermediary, obtain advice on that specific arrangement; a portfolio containing Italian assets does not by itself establish qualification.

How much cash should I make available?
Separate qualifying capital from professional fees, documentation, banking, currency conversion and the family's moving costs. Ask for each amount and payment date in writing. If your assets are in sterling, decide who manages the conversion and how you will ensure the full euro commitment reaches the correct recipient. Keep an accessible reserve outside the investment rather than building a moving budget around an expected dividend or early sale.

When can I realistically plan the move?
The Committee's stated assessment period is 30 days, with requests for further information affecting the clock. It is only one stage. The Nulla Osta is valid for six months for the visa application; consular processing and travel follow. After entry, apply for the residence permit within eight working days and complete the investment within three months. Build the family calendar around confirmed milestones, including the practical time needed for banking and documents.

Can the whole family move on the same timetable?
That depends on each person's eligibility and the procedure used. Minor children and a spouse may qualify subject to the applicable conditions; adult children face a much narrower category involving total disability. Later family reunification and accompanying-family applications must be distinguished. Current reunification rules include a prior-residence condition for certain relatives. Have Italian counsel confirm the available procedure before assuming that every dependant can travel or obtain a permit alongside you.

Can I retain my main home outside Italy?
Investor-permit holders benefit from a statutory exemption from continuity-of-stay requirements during the first five years. This flexibility still requires attention to appointments, investment conditions and renewals. It also does not establish eligibility for permanent residence: that has its own qualifying residence, absence and other requirements. Define whether your objective is flexible access, an actual move or a later permanent status, because those objectives need different planning.

Will an Italian permit end my UK tax residence?
No. HMRC's Statutory Residence Test considers days, work and UK ties for each tax year. Split-year treatment requires its own conditions; a departure date alone does not establish it. UK-source income may remain taxable after becoming non-resident, and a later return can bring temporary non-residence rules into play. Review the intended departure, retained home, family location, business activity and possible return with your UK adviser before relying on a tax saving.

Does Italy's new-resident tax regime come with the visa?
It requires a separate eligibility assessment and election. For transfers of residence from 1 January 2026, the statutory annual substitute tax is €300,000, with €50,000 for each qualifying family member included through an extension. Its scope concerns qualifying foreign-source income, with exceptions. Earlier movers may fall under different amounts. Compare the actual income, gains and family position with ordinary taxation and the applicable treaty before deciding whether the regime is appropriate.

What should be agreed before I commit?
Ask for a clear allocation of responsibilities: who assesses investment eligibility, who reviews the commercial documents, who handles immigration and who coordinates the two tax analyses. Agree the scope, costs and cancellation terms of each engagement. Give the advisers one consistent set of facts about ownership, family and intended residence. A written list of unresolved points is more useful at this stage than an estimated approval date unsupported by your file.
MFG coordinates investment and residence planning with qualified local professionals. A productive first discussion brings together your preferred timing, family circumstances, investment budget and existing UK advice. The next step is to identify what needs to be established before you choose an investment or a moving date. Capital is at risk; immigration and tax outcomes depend on the relevant conditions.
