Italy Investor Visa: investment risk, liquidity and maintaining residence
MFG Consultants · Updated 4 November 2026
The investment needs to work within both your finances and your residence plan. An investor who expects cash back after two years may face a different commercial reality. Another may be comfortable holding longer but need clarity on what happens if the business changes. These questions belong in the review before commitment, while the documents and responsibilities can still be examined.
How much of my capital is exposed?
MFG focuses on qualifying startup investment from €250,000 and Italian-company investment from €500,000. The amount committed is investment capital and can lose value. Add professional, transaction and ongoing costs to understand your total financial exposure. Assess a severe downside against your wider portfolio and household needs. An immigration approval does not establish that the price, business prospects or liquidity are suitable for you.

Does the lower investment threshold mean lower risk?
It means a smaller minimum commitment. The risk assessment still depends on the particular business and terms. For a startup, examine cash runway, revenue, financing needs, valuation and what later funding could do to your ownership. For an established company, examine debt, cash generation, governance and the price you are paying. Decide whether the exposure is acceptable without assuming that the residence benefit will offset a financial loss.

What documents establish my ownership and rights?
Identify the issuer, instrument, ownership record and any bank, custodian or intermediary involved. Ask which documents prove that the qualifying investment was completed and remains held. Review voting and information rights, dilution, transfer restrictions and distributions. If someone describes capital as protected, request the actual contractual provision, who owes the obligation and the conditions for enforcing it. Do not build the decision on an unverified verbal assurance.

When must the funds actually be invested?
The published procedure excludes investments made before submitting the Nulla Osta application. After the visa is issued and you enter Italy, the qualifying investment must be completed within three months. The permit application has an earlier deadline of eight working days after entry. Before travelling, confirm the receiving account, signing process, transfer arrangements and evidence needed. A request for additional evidence does not extend the underlying three-month investment deadline.

Can I expect my money back after two years?
The initial two-year permit does not create a repayment obligation. Maintaining investor residence through renewal requires continued satisfaction of the investment conditions. Separately, your ability to recover capital depends on the instrument's terms, a buyer or an available redemption mechanism, and the value at exit. An unlisted holding may have no ready market. Compare the realistic investment horizon with both your renewal objective and your personal cash needs.

Can I sell or switch to a different investment?
Do not treat the qualifying holding as a portfolio position that can be freely replaced. The official operational manual requires the original investment to be maintained and says a change of investment recipient requires a new visa application. Obtain Italian immigration advice before a sale, redemption, restructuring or proposed substitution. Commercial permission to transfer an investment does not establish that the transaction preserves your residence position.

What if the business fails or its legal status changes?
A fall in valuation, insolvency, a merger and a change in startup-register status raise different questions. Do not assume either automatic protection or the same immigration result for every event. Ask Italian immigration counsel to assess the actual facts alongside the company's legal advisers and, where relevant, the manager. Establish what evidence is needed and whether clarification from the competent authority is required before agreeing to a rescue transaction or replacement.

What happens to my money if the application is refused?
Map the payments by stage. Identify which adviser fees, administrative charges, reservation payments or subscriptions are payable before each decision, and read the relevant cancellation and refund clauses. A Nulla Osta does not remove the consulate's power to refuse the visa. The documents you sign determine contractual refund rights; never assume that every amount is refundable because the investment deadline comes later. Ask for unresolved conditions to be addressed before payment.

What should a useful decision file contain?
Keep the eligibility assessment, ownership documents, cost schedule, funding timetable, downside analysis and exit restrictions together. Add the evidence needed for renewal and the person responsible for monitoring each deadline. Record which questions belong to the immigration lawyer, investment professional, company or tax adviser. If your plan depends on an early exit, a guaranteed return or a particular family outcome, resolve that dependency before the commitment becomes binding.
MFG coordinates investment and residence planning with qualified local professionals. The purpose of an investment review is to make the ownership, obligations and unresolved risks understandable before you proceed. Share your liquidity needs and intended residence horizon at the outset. Capital is at risk, and neither an investment return nor an immigration outcome can be guaranteed.
